Community biography from SoundUnwound - Stone Temple Pilots
Stone Temple Pilots were one of the key bands of the grunge era of alternative rock that emerged in the early 90s.
They were formed in the late 1980s and by 1990 they had fixed their line-up (Dean DeLeo, Robert DeLeo, Eric Kretz and Scott Weiland) and adopted the name Stone Temple Pilots. By 1992 they had signed to Atlantic Records and released their debut album Core which has subsequently achieved 8x platinum sales. Singles from the album, including "Sex Type Thing", "Plush" and "Creep" went on to become hits, though perhaps not in the eyes of the critics who gave them something of a mauling.
Purple, their second album, was released in 1994 and it debuted at the top of the Billboard charts, partly as a result of the success of the hit single "Interstate Love Song". Unfortunately in 1995 Weiland was arrested for drug possession and the band split soon after. Disruptions as a result of Weiland's ongoing substance abuse were to become an ongoing issue for the band.
The break didn't last long and later that year they started to record their third album Tiny Music... Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop. It was released in 1996; following the trend for STP releases, the fans loved it, the critics didn't. The promotion of the album was not helped by Weiland's continuing and worsening drug addiction - they weren't able to tour at all and tolerated Weiland's involuntary stay in rehab with reluctance.
No.4 was released in 1999 spawning the hit singles "Sour Girl", "Down" and "No Way Out". Soon after the album, Weiland went to jail for violating probation and the next album was not released until 2001. Shangri-La Dee Da completed the five album obligation to the record label and the band split in 2002 after the tour for the album.
Members of the band went on to achieve success with other bands including Army of Anyone and Velvet Revolver but in 2008, much to the delight of dedicated fans, the band announced a reformation, with a tour and a new album expected later the same year.
