KISS bassist/vocalist Gene Simmons spoke to QMI Agency this week about the progress of the recording sessions for the band's new album. Legendary guitarist Slash (VELVET REVOLVER, GUNS N' ROSES) makes a guest appearance on the song "Saturday Night" from BLINK-182 drummer and hip-hop producer Travis Barker. The track, which will appear on Barker's upcoming solo album, "Give The Drummer Some", is now available for streaming at the KROQ.radio.com web site.
"Give The Drummer Some" is scheduled for release on March 15 via Interscope Records. The CD's first single is "Can A Drummer Get Some", featuring The Game, Swizz Beats, Lil Wayne, and Rick Ross. "Jump Down", featuring The Cool Kids; and "Carry It", featuring RZA, Raekwon, and Tom Morello, are currently available on iTunes. Former MEGADETH/KING DIAMOND guitarist Glen Drover will release a solo single, "Ground Zero", on March 21 through Magna Carta Records. The label will press a very limited amount of CD copies, which will be available through Amazon.com. This single will also feature a alternate version of the song, which contains different solos from Glen and Jim Gilmour (keyboards), as well as a different mix.
"Ground Zero" is the first single from Drover's recently completed debut solo album, "Metalusion", which will be released on April 5 via Magna Carta Records.

Writing on his newly launched official Facebook page, Drover states, "In December of 2007, I made one of the hardest decisions I have ever had to make in my life, which was to leave the band MEGADETH — a band that I had worked very hard with and helped bring back from the dead. Although I am very happy about what we accomplished in the four-year period I was in the band, things had changed quite a bit towards the end of my time with MEGADETH, and not necessarily for the better for me, so I handed in my resignation, so to speak.
"Shortly after a nice long break, I decided to start recording again, but wanted to try something different, which was to form a band and play all instrumental music — a task that would not be easy and would become something very challenging and fun, of course! A combination of metal, harder edge jazz fusion and prog. I contacted Chris Sutherland and shared this idea with him and he was very excited about this possibility. At that point, he recommended a friend of his to play bass, Paul Yee, and also recommended Jim Gilmour from the prog rock band SAGA, which Chris had played with for a short while.
"Not knowing how this set of musicians would sound like together, I though it would be a good idea to record three tracks — one Al Dimeola track, as well as two tracks from the awesome Jean Luc Ponty.
"I'm not sure if any of us really knew how well any of these tracks would turn out, Not knowing if we would jell properly, etc..Well, we could not be happier! That is what set the pace and the start of what I consider to be a great band of guys who are on the same page and very excited and driven to write and play the best we can.. and have fun doing things 'our way' and not following any trends!!
"This new album, coming out in the early 2011 is going to be called 'Metalusion' and was recorded sporadically over a 2-plus-year period.
"As an engineer, I worked very hard to make this album the very best production I can deliver to date! I am also very happy and honored to be playing with musicians of a very high level, as well as good people. It's something I always wanted to do and it's not something you find at the corner store. Believe me, I know.
"I hope you enjoy this album as much as we do."

1Brazilian/American thrashers SEPULTURA have finished recording their new album at Trama Studios in São Paulo, Brazil with producer Roy Z. (JUDAS PRIEST, HALFORD, BRUCE DICKINSON, HELLOWEEN). 13 tracks were laid down during the sessions for the new CD, including cover versions of MINISTRY's "Just One Fix" and THE PRODIGY's "Firestarter", both of which are expected to be made available as bonus tracks on various special-edition releases. The band has yet to reveal the title for the album, which is said to contain some of SEPULTURA's most personal lyrics to date. Among the songs that will appear on the effort is "Born Strong", the subject matter of which is said to deal with balancing road life with raising a family as well as the bandmembers' experiences as musicians and as people.
SEPULTURA's new album is tentatively due in May via Nuclear Blast Records.
The band debuted a brand new song from the upcoming CD during an October 17, 2010 appearance at the Fúria Festival at HSBC Brasil in São Paulo.
SEPULTURA will return to North America for a massive headlining tour next April/May in support of their upcoming Nuclear Blast Records debut. Joining them will be a veritable united nations on metal in the form of Austria's BELPHEGOR, Norway's KEEP OF KALESSIN, Poland's HATE, Canada's NEURAXIS, and California's BONDED BY BLOOD. Starting May 23, Seattle's own NEVERMORE will replace BELPHEGOR to finish out the tour.

"Overlord", a brand new song from Colorado power metallers JAG PANZER, can be streamed using the audio player below (courtesy of AOL's Noisecreep). The track comes off the band's new album, "Scourge Of The Light", which was released on February 28 in Europe (except in Germany, where it will arrive three days earlier) and will be made avaialble on March 8 in the U.S. via SPV/Steamhammer Records. In addition to the regular CD version, the effort will be made available as a double-vinyl set.

For the original band members Harry Conklin (vocals), Mark Briody (guitar) and John Tetley (bass), JAG PANZER has always been something they held close to their hearts. "We've known each other from our earliest childhood and have never lost sight of the idea that this band is based on," Tetley explains. "I don't exactly want to use the term 'spiritual', but the three of us are connected with this band by a very special relationship. You could say that our lives are inseparably linked with the history of JAG PANZER."
This heartfelt passion has always been apparent in their songs, however: the American band has never sounded as impressive, mature and accomplished as on their latest album, "The Scourge Of The Light".
The reasons? Well, there are probably a number of them. Without a doubt, the band's two main songwriters, guitarists Mark Briody and Christian Lasegue, have never been in better form. Every one of their extremely dynamic riffs sounds haunting, every melody cuts their listeners to the core. It may sound like a contradiction, but since guitarist Chris Broderick, who was a bandmember between 1997 and 2007, left to join MEGADETH, JAG PANZER have returned to their old roots. "There can be no question that Chris Broderick is an amazing guitarist, and we were really happy for him that he got this chance with MEGADETH. But we feel that thanks to Christian Lasegue, JAG PANZER's classic, clearly more melodic power metal style has returned and that the fans will definitely be happy about this." Tetley may well be right since JAG PANZER's most recent studio recording "Casting The Stones" (2004) was criticized, especially in Europe, for its noticeably harsher direction. "We knew that Christian was the best man for the job; after all he was a band member for three years in the mid-1980s," the band says.
But there are other reasons, too, why "The Scourge Of The Light" sounds so impressive. Despite their limited production budget, JAG PANZER spared no expense or effort to give their ten fantastic new songs a driving their trademark sound. For this reason, they asked Jim Morris to mix the recordings at his legendary Morrisound Studios in Florida and sent the result to New York's renowned Sterling Sound for mastering. The result is a real ear catcher, without any ifs and buts.
"I feel 'The Scourge Of The Light' is the best-sounding album in the history of JAG PANZER," Tetley says.

Emma Changose of Northern Arizona News recently conducted an interview with guitarist Nick Hipa of San Diego, California metallers AS I LAY DYING. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.
Northern Arizona News: So, this month is actually the band's 10-year anniversary, correct?
Nick: Yeah, well like, this whole year is like a 10-year anniversary of the band. Maybe it is this month in particular that is more of a specific date.
Northern Arizona News: How have you celebrated?
Nick: Well, we haven't really made any official announcements yet or anything, but we did record a couple songs in the beginning of January with the intent of them being on some sort of EP that commemorates the longevity of the band up until this point. So, I don't know if that means we are going to put out a ten-year EP sometime soon, but it makes the most sense for us to do it for that. But that's just all in the works for right now; nothing for sure yet.
Northern Arizona News: How does your religion influence your music?
Nick: It has nothing to do with my playing or music, at least for me. I'm just a guitar player like any other dude who is in a pop-rock band or a black metal band. I play guitar because I love it and I love music. My beliefs don't have anything to do with how I play guitar.
Northern Arizona News: Do you guys ever get criticized by your fans for being Christians, but using symbols such as skulls and death in many of your logos and merchandise?
Nick: Um, no, not really. I think sometimes the media wants to focus more on the Christian aspect of the band, when we concentrate more on just the fact that we are a normal band who plays shows just like everyone else. I feel like for most fans of heavy metal music, it just fits. I don't want to say that we are just doing what we are supposed to be doing, but I think the imagery is a pretty accurate visual description of the band. It just fits.
Northern Arizona News: AS I LAY DYING has accomplished a lot - Grammy nominations, playing in huge tours like Ozzfest, and touring internationally - is there anything you haven't done yet that you would really like to do?
Nick: You know, I think I would just like to go to even more countries than we've already been to. We've been so lucky and fortunate to travel to parts of the world that I thought I would never get to see, and if we can just keep on doing that and expanding on that, I would be stoked. Or even going back to some of those places [that we've been to before]. Like, we've never done China or Africa yet. Just being able to go to some of those places would be exciting for me. And then, aside from that, a METALLICA tour. They're one of the only bands that we haven't toured with yet. Maybe we can put that on the list of things that would be awesome for us to do.

"Asylon", the sixth album from NEURAXIS, was released in North America on February 15 via Prosthetic Records. The CD was recorded at Wildsound Studio with producer Chris Donaldson (CRYPTOPSY, THE LAST FELONY, THE AGONIST). The cover art was created by artist Dennis Sibeijn of Damnengine Artwork, who worked with the band on its previous CD, "The Thin Line Between", as well with JOB FOR A COWBOY, CHIMAIRA and more.

NEURAXIS vocalist Alex Leblanc commented on the decision to title the album "Asylon": "'Asylum' is the first song I wrote for the album. It opened up a ton of ideas for all the other ones. After I was done writing all the lyrics, I was looking for the word asylum in Latin. I realized it did not exist but it did in ancient Greek. The word 'asylon' had a deeper meaning so it was more fitting to use it to globalize the whole mood/concept of the album."
NEURAXIS will support SEPULTURA on a spring North American headlining tour. In addition, NEURAXIS will hit the road with death metal masters DEICIDE in February and March.
VINCE NEIL Says MÖTLEY CRÜE Bandmates Always Have 'Ulterior Motive'
According to The Pulse of Radio, MÖTLEY CRÜE frontman Vince Neil opens up in a new interview with Popeater about some of the more controversial passages in his newly released memoir, "Tattoos & Tequila". Among Neil's targets in the book are the other members of the CRÜE themselves, with Neil writing that he dreads when one of them calls because there's always an "ulterior motive." Asked about this, Neil explains, "For a while there was always an ulterior motive for everything that was done and I still think that way. When decisions are made about something I always try to figure out the angle. I don't completely trust them but I don't think they completely trust me either . . . That's with all MÖTLEY business, not just the band."
But Neil adds about his bandmates, "It's not that I don't like them — we love each other . . . Everybody has their quirks and some are more irritating than others."
As for managers, Neil is briefer, saying, "They're all scum."
Neil also calls troubled actor Mel Gibson a "great guy" and admits he was surprised to hear the recent tapes of Gibson making racist and threatening remarks to his girlfriend, saying, "He's a friend and I've never seen that part of him. When we used to hang out we would drink and smoke cigars."
Legendary Swedish guitaristYNGWIE MALMSTEEN is back in the studio recording a brand new album for a late 2010 release. More information will be made available soon.
Malmsteen released the "Raw Live" DVD on June 29. According to a press release, the set "provides an unprecedented and unique look at the rise of a guitar god. Spanning from 1981 through 1999 and encompassing extremely rare footage of Yngwie's early years in Sweden, this video displays the infancy of Yngwie's prodigious skills well prior to his first worldwide album and travels through Yngwie's masterful career, including his masterful performances from his first solo albums, 'Rising Force', 'Marching Out', and 'Trilogy'. Also included in this unique video are never-released behind-the-scenes footage of Yngwie and newly shot personal touches of Yngwie which open up the viewer to a side of the guitar maestro which is rarely seen by the public."
Yngwie Malmsteen donated his guitar to the city of Bologna during the inauguration of Music Italy Show — Italy's most important trade fair featuring musical instruments, publishing, backstage equipment, DJ and discography — on May 15. The Commissariat of Bologna (Mayor) was present to accept this honor, along with the President of BolognaFiere. Multiple local authorities from the Emilia Romagna region and province and city of Bologna were also in the audience.
The ceremony opened with a performance by the 65-piece Giuseppe Verdi marchingband followed by Yngwie signing and presenting his guitar to the city of Bologna.
Yngwie Malmsteen headlined "The Ultimate World Guitar Exhibition" at this year's Music Italy Show, which was held May 15-17, 2010 in Bologna, Italy. Malmsteen also took part in an exclusive clinic on May 18 at Castlebrando in Treviso, Italy — considered to be one of Italy's most impressive medieval castles. Fans got a chance to experience Yngwie's wizardry playing up close and personal.
Universal Music will release "The Big Four: Live From Sofia, Bulgaria" DVD and Blu-ray containing footage of the June 22, 2010 Sonisphere cinecast from the Sofia, Bulgaria leg of the touring rock festival featuring the "Big Four" of 1980s thrash metal — METALLICA, SLAYER, MEGADETH and ANTHRAX. The DVD hits the streets on October 15 in Northern Europe, October 18 in most of the rest of the world, October 19 in North America and the full shows from all four bands will be included in the two-disc set along with behind-the-scenes and interview footage. In addition to the two-DVD set and the corresponding Blu-ray, there will be a limited-edition "super deluxe" box set including the DVD set, five CDs with ALL the music, a 24-page booklet, a poster, photos of each band, and a "Big Four" guitar pick.

METALLICA was joined onstage during the show by members of MEGADETH, SLAYER and ANTHRAX for a performance of the DIAMOND HEAD song "Am I Evil?"
METALLICA frontman James Hetfield, MEGADETH singer/guitarist Dave Mustaine and ANTHRAX vocalist Joey Belladonna took turns singing the song, which has been a part of METALLICA's live set for decades. The event marked the first time that Dave Mustaine had performed onstage with METALLICA since April 9, 1983. An original member of the band, he was fired just weeks before METALLICA recorded its debut album, "Kill 'Em All".
Mustaine, who was replaced by Kirk Hammett, went on to form MEGADETH and achieve worldwide success on his own.
He still harbored a grudge against METALLICA, however, with some of his feelings coming out in an intense scene with drummer Lars Ulrich in the 2005 documentary "Some Kind Of Monster".
According to Billboard.com, the Sonisphere cinecast from Sofia was beamed via satellite in HD to cinemas and was seen by more than 100,000 fans. It was distributed globally into hundreds of cinemas by New York-based BY Experience

In the U.K. it was screened in 79 cinemas. "At the Odeon in Leicester Square in London there was a mosh pit, and at the end of the show they had a stage invasion, which is just phenomenal to even think about," promoter Stuart Galbraith told Billboard.com.

SEVEN THE HARDWAY, the new Southern California-based progressive rock/metal band featuring guitar virtuoso Tony MacAlpine (STEVE VAI, PLANET X, CAB), legendary drummer Virgil Donati (PLANET X, STEVE VAI, SOUL SIRKUS), renowned vocalist Mark Boals (ULI JON ROTH, ROYAL HUNT, YNGWIE MALMSTEEN), bass player Doug Shreeve and 21-year-old Argentinian newcomer Stefania Daniel on guitar, released its 10-track self-titled debut on August 23 in Europe via Mascot Records. Due in the USA on September 14, the CD was mixed by Roy Z. (HALFORD, BRUCE DICKINSON, JUDAS PRIEST, HELLOWEEN) and was mastered by Maor Appelbaum.
The band will kick off a month-long tour of Europe on September 16. The group's live show will consist of tracks from the new album, along with well-known selections from MacAlpine's and Donati's solo work, and their previous band project with Boals — RING OF FIRE. The show will appeal to both followers of MacAlpine, Donati and Boals' previous collaborations and solo work, as well as drum and guitar enthusiasts and fans of progressive hard rock and metal.

"Static Impulse", the new solo album from DREAM THEATER singer James LaBrie, will be released on September 28 (one day earlier internationally) via InsideOut Music. The CD marks LaBrie's first solo effort in over five years and is sure to please his legion of diehard fans, as well as win over many new devotees in the process.

Mixed and mastered by Jens Borgen (OPETH, KATATONIA), "Static Impulse" features LaBrie's longtime songwriting partner and keyboardist Matt Guillory; Peter Wildoer from Swedish thrashers DARKANE on drums and screaming vocals; Marco Sfogli on guitar; and Ray Riendeau (HALFORD) on bass.

"Musically speaking, 'One More Time' is sort of a marriage of old-school progressive elements and modern melodic death metal," Guillory told Noisecreep. "We wanted to have a drastic contrast between what's going on in the verses and what's going on in the choruses. There's almost a pop feel near the end where both James' vocals and my vocals start layering in different ways. Lyrically, the song is about dealing with the loss of a loved one."
LaBrie previously stated about "Static Impulse", "This is modern metal and as heavy and relevant as any other band out there going in a similar musical direction. There are riffs that will blow your head off and melodies both musically and vocally that are hypnotic."
Added Guillory: "I'm really pleased with the way this record came out. James sounds fantastic, as well as the rest of the guys. Without a doubt, it's our heaviest record thus far yet at the same time, it's also our most melodic. I can't wait for everyone to hear it."
In addition to DREAM THEATER's numerous studio and live releases, LaBrie has also appeared on recordings by FATES WARNING, REDEMPTION, FRAMESHIFT and AYREON, as well as tribute albums to RUSH, EMERSON LAKE & PALMER and QUEEN.
LaBrie's last solo album, "Elements of Persuasion", was released in 2005 InsideOut Music. The CD featured a special guest appearance by fellow Canadian Kim Mitchell (MAX WEBSTER). Engineering chores were handled by James' old WINTER ROSE bandmate Richard Chycki who has done work for the likes of AEROSMITH, RUSH, and the JEFF HEALEY BAND.

The follow-up to 2008's "Stronghold Of Men" was recorded at the Conclave and Earshot Studio, the central Bergen studio owned by VULTURE INDUSTRIES' Bjørnar E. Nilsen and ENSLAVED's Herbrand Larssen and Arve Isdal, and was once again produced by Bart Schlagermeister (Bjørnar E. Nilsen).

Formed in Bergen in the summer of 2006, THE BATALLION's hugely experienced musicians hail from some of the most legendary bands in Norway — OLD FUNERAL, GRIMFIST, TAAKE, BORKNAGAR, ST. SATAN, DEATHCON and BOMBERS. The members' shared love of traditional metal drew them together to form a band that epitomizes the spirit and feel of the genre; from the choice of stage names — with Stud Bronson on guitar and vocals, Lust Kilman on guitar, Colt Kane on bass and Morden on drums, to the authentic sound of their music and their headbanging live performances.
THE BATALLION will appear at this year's Southern Discomfort Festival in Kristiansand on September 18 and will hold a release party for "Head Up High" at Inside Rock Cafe in Bergen on October 15.
As fresh and creative as ENEMY OF THE SUN's "Shadows" debut may be, it might have been a stretch to expect the sophomore effort to match the same level of freshness and creativity. So if you didn't do any stretching in that direction, then congratulate yourself on a job well done. As damning as it may sound to some (and not in any way intended to be so), "Caedium" could have very well been titled "Shadows: Part II". With the exception of a slightly more aggressive stance, the similarities between the two albums are many. Fortunately, that also means that there is catchiness, yet in lesser quantities, and lots of scintillating guitar work from Waldemar Sorychta (DESPAIR, EYES OF EDEN, GRIP INC.) that to a purely non-technical ear reminds of "Shadows", too; the techies can quibble over the finer points of picking.
Balancing bloated expectations with isolated assessment, "Caedium" is an album that any fan of "Shadows" will enjoy. The question is whether if given the choice how many times they'd chose one over the other. I'm betting "Shadows" eight times out of ten, mainly because it gives you everything you need from ENEMY OF THE SUN and the songs are more memorable. Once again, that sounds way more damning of "Caedium" than intended. The sophomore effort still boasts many modern hard-chargers like "Another End of the Rainbow", "Castaways in the N.W.O.", "Ticket", and "Paradigm" that marry GRIP INC. franticness (embodied by the chorus of "Try Out" here) with a metallic style in the vicinity of DIVINE HERESY and FEAR FACTORY, yet with a distinctly ENEMY OF THE SUN personality and progressivity. That individuality comes from Sorychta's unique playing style and the effortless way he mixes in Flamenco acoustic touches and Middle Eastern runs into the mix (e.g. "I am One" and "Chasing the Dragon"), as well as drifting into territory that is well traveled, yet remade, such as THE CLASH/reggae strainer through which "Aimless" is run. Jules Näveri's versatility continue to be a selling point as well, though the Burton C. Bell by way of Serj Tankian (kind of) approach that positively glowed on "Shadows" shines less brightly here.
Heard without comparison to its predecessor and considering the numerous positive elements (guitar playing, vocals, melodies, and pure drive) involved, "Caedium" is a very good album. But "Shadows" is a masterwork that just cannot be duplicated. That's the difference. Snort it, stuff it, or toss it; do anything you'd like with that.
